Letters, we got letters....
Business English vs. Regular English?
we got stacks and stacks of letters!
...........................................................................

We love to get letters from job hunters and business people from around the world, who have questions about Japan, Australia, or America!

So today, I am going to answer a wonderful letter from a visitor of JE who asks the question(s):

..................................

Dear Mr. Michael Machida,

Hello from Deerborn Michigan!

I have been reading your bitflips for about a year now, and I enjoy it very much.

I would like to move to Japan and work as a business English teacher. However, I am not sure what that is exactly.

I have a degree in the arts and have not taught before, but I know I would be good at it.

Can you tell me, or guide me in the direction I need to go to work as a business English teacher in Tokyo?

Also, what is the difference between a business English teacher and a regular English teacher?

Thanks for your help.

George R.

....................................

All great questions George!

First of all, having experience teaching just about anything is a great way to get your foot in the door - of any position that requires giving instruction to a large or medium size group of people in Japan.

If you can teach at your local school (as a volunteer) before coming to Japan, is a wonderful way to get your resume to shine in the eyes of the hiring managers of schools in Japan.

Experience is the root of all knowledge as the Japanese saying goes.

If you have experience teaching just about anything, Japan wants your skill in giving instruction in your own native language.

So get experience teaching something in your home country before coming to Japan.

And, the difference between a business English teacher and a regular English teacher, is just what is sounds like:

A business English teacher teaches not only corporate vocabulary, a business English teacher must posses hands on corporate experience.

Actual working knowledge on the corporate level is best. Understanding business processes and micro and macro economics is also a key skill.

A regular English teacher teaches English in general terms. Usually regular English teachers work at kindergartens, elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and universities.

A regular English teacher teaches from the ground up. Beginning English to advanced English, in terms of daily usage and not on the corporate level.
