As you may know, Japan is the land of harmony which evolves in tradition as well as in modernization.

With its colorful culture ~ Japan has a distinct system of hierarchy, and etiquette that is still reflected in most social and business venues.

Should your company open a branch office in Japan, success depends on an understanding of the correct protocol.

One of the most valued principle in Japan is the concept of wa, or living in peace.

In terms of business with the Japanese, wa means the complete avoidance of self assertion.

When you are in Japan for business or to locate a job, it is important to remember how important wa is to the Japanese in all situations.

For example, avoiding all confrontations and criticism at all times; in business, this must be observed at all costs or the business relationship is over.

Other situations that the Japanese find very unsettling is when a meeting is to start at 1:00pm ~ and participants are late by a mere minute or so, can create a sense of unprofessionalism.

Punctuality is essential to the Japanese. Arriving to a meeting ten or fifteen minutes early is best to be observed.

The Japanese Business Meeting:

In Japan, the structure in Japanese business is reflected in the negotiation process and other venues.

Beginning with the executive level and continuing to the middle level, and lower levels.

However, beware that all decisions will be made within the group ~ and not from one or two representatives. The entire group will make the final decision on all matters.

Japanese business in terms of meetings

Japanese businessmen line up in order of seniority in all situations, with the senior representative in the front and the least near the door.

Remember that in Japan, it is important to show great respect to the most senior members in a Japanese business.

As you can well imagine, the recent changes in Japan and in the Japanese business climate has made it very important that educational background and ability are often considered over age.
